Here's another article to prove that a trivial past-time which can be considered a meaningless waste of time can actually do pretty awesome things.

When you're listening to a boring lecture or meeting, doodling may just be the right thing to kill boredom. What if I tell you that this absentminded scribbling isn't just a lazy diversion, in fact, research has confirmed that doodling helps you focus, lets you retain information, and sparks creativity.

This may sound incredulous. How could you possibly concentrate when you're doodling?

It's not certain how the trick of doodling works to help a person concentrate. It could be that doodling helps you to be awake enough that you are able to do the given taks. Doodling also deters daydreaming which prevents you from escaping reality.

In a study by Andrade, J., 40 participants's were split into two groups. Both groups were tasked to listen to a monotonous recorded voice while taking down notes. However, only one group was allowed to doodle (shading predrawn-shapes). Amazingly, they've found out that those who doodle while taking down notes recalled 29% more information compared to those who did not doodle.

So the next time you see those random sketches, you'll know that they aren't as useless as they seem.
