Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder that affects a person's thinking, emotion, speech, action, and motivation. Here are the symptoms most commonly experienced by a person suffering from schizophrenia:
Signs and Symptoms of Schizophrenia:
Positive symptoms of schizophrenia includes:
Delusions (e.g., paranoia that people are conspiring against you; feeling that you are being watched)
Hallucinations (e.g., hearing nonexistent voices; seeing nonexistent things)
Difficulty distinguishing real from imaginary (eg., belief in having a superpower)
Disorganized speech (eg., jumble of words; irrelevant words; meaningless sentences)
Bizarre behavior and movement (eg., jerking or involuntary movement of limbs)
Strange posture or movement (eg., awkward gait when walking)
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia includes:
Inability to express emotion (eg., speaks with a flat tone of voice; flat affect)
Inability of feel pleasure (eg., inability to smile/laugh)
Withdrawal from peers / social isolation
Apathy
Lack of initiative or motivation (eg., neglect in self care)
Cognitive impairment
Memory decline
Poor concentration
Learning impairment
Declining performance at school or at work
